LIFANA

Lifelong food and nutrition assistance package

Through the LIFANA project we aim to create a software to support healthy nutrition through all phases of ageing, from active seniors to elderly users in need of care, thus guaranteeing longer living at home by tackling malnutrition.

Motivation:

Many elderly suffer from nutritional problems that can cause chronic health conditions, such as high blood pressure or cardiovascular diseases, as well as food allergies. Individuals with various forms of diet restrictions and sensitivities must avoid certain foods or food ingredients, and selecting meals can become a tedious task requiring the painstaking deciphering of ingredient lists and package labels.

Solution:

The goal of the project LIFANA is to develop software to support healthy nutrition through all phases of ageing, from active seniors to elderly users in need of care, thus guaranteeing longer living at home by tackling malnutrition.

FhP-AICOS’ main task is to develop a meal planning component, which recommends meals for a whole week based on the user’s personal profile. This may include general preferences, such as culture, taste, and budget, but more importantly nutritional and diet recommendations.

We will achieve this by creating a system that will provide meal recommendations to older adults based on health characteristics, lifestyle, culture, resources, availability, local production and season; help older adults manage their groceries shopping; and that will leverage the power of local communities to assist each other in food related aspects.

Benefit:

Individual meal recommendations based on personal advice from professional nutritionists and integrated with decision support in the supermarket will assist the users to change their eating habits in order to maintain a healthier lifestyle. It will be also addressed socio-economic aspects by taking advantage of promotional offers from retailers.
