solution will tackle food allergies

FhP-AICOS’ researchers will tackle a new challenge by incorporating food restrictions born from allergies and chronic disease into the meal recommendation system, in a project called LIFANA.

MalariaScope’s potential through the eyes of Angolan health professionals

Neida Ramos, a PhD student, presented the conclusions of a study involving the MalariaScope solution during her internship at FhP-AICOS (Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS) last week. The results demonstrate that Angolan health professionals show a deep interest in this easy to use and low cost solution developed by FhP-AICOS.


Fostering innovation in service design through network research

In 2017 FhP-AICOS joined the Service Design for Innovation Network (SDIN) as Associated Partner, aiming to pursue the strategic need to foster service design for innovation processes in organizations. In April, the centre welcomed its 2nd international PhD student, Ana Kustrak Korper.

Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS signs cooperation protocol with Lobata District Council

The partnership will help promote better access to the Internet and improve the digital services of the District Council. The official ceremony occurred on October 24th, with the presence of the Mayor of the Lobata District Council, Policarpo Freitas.


Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge 2017: Winners Revealed

The 2017 edition of the Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge, an idea contest promoted by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS with the objective of motivating and rewarding research of practical utility, ended today. The Closing Event featured a presentation by the finalists, followed by the jury’s assessment and the announcement of the winners.


VISUM 2017 awards FhP-AICOS’ team with an Honourable Mention

Face detection and recognition was the challenge made by the VISUM Summer School 2017 to 18 international teams of researchers. Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS took the second place with an outstanding presentation, having received an Honourable Mention. The event occurred from 7th to 14th of July, in Porto.


WGW4IoT: End of project with outstanding results

The WGW4IoT project, developed by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS for the Portuguese company TekOn Electronics (Bresimar Automação, S.A.), is coming to an end, achieving outstanding results. New additional developments are under way and the first steps to turn this prototype into a commercial product are already being taken.


SkinLesions amongst the finalists of the contest Born from Knowledge

Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS submitted the technology SkinLesions to the contest Born from Knowlegde, promoted by ANI, and was chosen as one of the finalists. The selected business ideas receive, as reward, the participation in the Immersion Programme.


Liliana Ferreira on RTP3

Last Thursday (14th of September), the new Director of Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS was in the TV channel RTP3 to comment the news of the day. Besides leading the research centre, Liliana Ferreira is also a Professor at Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.


SV4D: promoting digital inclusion in Mozambique

The last visit in the scope of the initiative Sustainable Village for Development was in Mozambique. The focus of this trip was to promote the digital inclusion in the country, having Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS presented a paper related to this subject in the 8th Luso-Mozambican Engineering Congress.


Network research: improving the competitiveness in organizations

In March, Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS received an international PhD student from the Netherlands. FhP was invited, by prof. Lia Patrício, of FEUP, to join the Service Design for Innovation Network as Associated Partner.

São Tomé and Príncipe: a suitable country for SV4D

The second stop of the presentation of the project Sustainable Villages for Development was in São Tomé and Príncipe. Liliana Ferreira: a new direction and future for Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS

Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS has now a new leader. Liliana Ferreira is, from today (September 7th), the new Director of the research centre. With a considerable academic and professional career, she is also Invited Full Professor at Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.


SV4D: presenting new ICT opportunities to Cape Verde

Cape Verde was the first country visited by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS this summer, to present the project Sustainable Villages for Development. Mobile-based solution to optimize dermatological screening

The SkinLesionsRS, developed by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS, is one of the projects supported by RESOLVE. The mobile-based solution aims to improve the referral process of skin lesions between Local Health Centres and Hospital Dermatology Departments.

Knowledge Sharing: Two internal workshops on Machine Learning and Unity3D

Promoting knowledge sharing and continuous training among researchers is one of the focus of Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS. Recently, two internal workshops took place, one of which was dedicated to Machine Learning and the other to the Unity3D game development platform.


iBoccia: a simple game with huge outcomes for seniors

Boccia was the game chosen by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS and Centro Algoritmi (University of Minho) to promote elderly’s physical activity. StepDetector: Interactive cognitive motor training with Pandlets

Detecting steps with high accuracy using inertial sensors is a challenge that has been taken recently by many teams. Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS joined the Swiss company Dividat GmbH and took the challenge of detecting steps on every direction (up-down-left-right) while the user is standing on a single spot.

Porto4Ageing: more than 90 institutions answer together to citizens needs

SmartBEAT app: Prototype under construction to assist heart failure patients

Ten European partners are working together to detect early signs and symptoms of heart failure decompensation in senior patients. The consortium of the SmartBEAT project gathered on 6th and 7th of April in Eindhoven (Netherlands) to discuss the details of the pilot.

Technology co-developed by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS tested in international pilot

The ShopView solution, developed by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS, Sonae MC and Wedo Technologies, was tested at the international retailer SPAR Austria. Using state of the art image processing technology, this prototype aims to help retailers to manage store replenishment processes.

Technology developed by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS exhibited in Hannover Messe

The Internet of Things (IoT) gateway that has been developed by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS for Tekon Electronics (Bresimar Automação SA) will be exhibited in Hannover Messe. The world's leading industrial show occurs from 24th to 28th of April and the Tekon booth can be found at Hall 8, stand A20.


More than 1.000 cultural contents available in ACP countries

The project ACP Street Libraries – Culture For All, coordinated by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS, has already collected 1.160 cultural contents that are available online in African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States’ countries.


Researchers debate Internet of Nano Things in Braga

The Internet of Things in Package (IoTiP) project was highlighted on the Internet of Nano Things (IoNT) workshop. “Wafer-level modular architecture for IoT” was the topic presented by the researchers of Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS and NANIUM S.A., the two partners of the project. The IoNT workshop occurred on March 7th and 8th, in the INL, in Braga.

2635998 is the number of the first European patent that got granted to Fraunhofer Portugal, under the title ‘Mobile Device and Infrastructure System‘. ​The innovation that is covered by the patent is ULF-MC, a system for Ultra-Low Frequency Magnetic Communication.


ShopView: an Automated Solution for all hypermarkets

The advantages of ShopView for the retail market were presented on January 9, at Continente of Matosinhos, and will be presented in Austria during this month. The prototype is part of the ShopView2Market project, that developed an Automated Solution to Validate Shelf Layouts in Stores.


Can a smartphone assess the risk of falling while performing usual daily activities?

Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS has been developing a solution for the evaluation of fall risk factors on a daily basis: the Fall Risk App. The application allows to continuously assess the mobility of the users while they are performing their usual daily activities.

‘PIL’ solution on the run for the Microsoft Indoor Location Competition

After placing 3rd in the 2015 Microsoft Indoor Location Competition - the most renowned competition in the field - Fraunhofer AICOS will once again participate in the indoor positioning location competition. The contest takes place on the 10th and 11th of April, during the CPS Week 2016, which this year is held from the 11th to the 14th of April, in Vienna (Austria).



For about three years (2013-2016) a consortium of several organizations, of which Fraunhofer AICOS is part, has built a thematic network named E-NO FALLS with the goal of integrating and bringing together knowledge, experiences and best practices acquired at the European and International level in the area of fall prevention, intervention and safety. More recently, at the Falls Festival 2016, a poster of the E-No Falls has been awarded the best poster.


Bridging the gap between the academic and the professional worlds

Each year, since its foundation in 2008, Fraunhofer AICOS hosts and guides Master’s students during the development of their Master’s dissertation project, allowing the students to develop their work in a professional environment, oriented to the creation of practical solutions.
