Job Description and Responsibilities:

Fraunhofer Portugal AICOSis seeking a talented Computer Vision and Generative AI Scientist to join our dynamic and multidisciplinary team within the Intelligent Systems group. In this role, you will be at the forefront of technological innovation, working on applied research projects that bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and real-world impact. You will contribute to initiatives that enhance industries, promote social well-being, and improve quality of life. Specifically, you will contribute to the research and development of synthetic data generation methodologies to improve the robustness of Machine Learning (ML) models.

 

Your role:

- Semantic segmentation and classification by ML:

> Explore and benchmark state-of-the-art semantic segmentation and classification models in medical images;

> Research and develop techniques of data and model auditing, identifying potential gaps or vulnerabilities in Computer Vision, to guarantee the robustness of ML development.

- Synthetic Data Generation and Evaluation:

> Research and develop methods of Generative AI for creating synthetic image data;

> Research and develop improved evaluation frameworks to assess the quality of synthetic data and its suitability for real-world use cases;

> Integrate synthetic data into auditing workflows and develop transparent reporting mechanisms.

- Collaboration and Maintenance:

> Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to integrate synthetic data strategies into existing pipelines and platforms;

> Maintain and refine current codebases, adhering to best practices in software development and reproducible research;

> Contribute to strategic discussions on advancing research directions, staying updated on cutting-edge ML methods related to object segmentation, synthetic data generation and evaluation, and model auditing methodologies.

 

Your profile:

- Mandatory Requirements:

> Academic Qualifications: Master’s degree or equivalent qualifications in Computer Vision.

- Technical Skills:

> Programming proficiency in Python and experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow;

> Demonstrated ML background, with relevant hands-on experience in Computer Vision approaches;

> Generative Models: Experience with GANs, VAEs, Diffusion Models, or other generative architectures;

> Evaluation of Synthetic Data: Understanding of metrics and methods to measure fidelity, privacy, and robustness of synthetic dataset.

Other skills:

> Excellent English communication skills (technical and general audiences);

> Capacity to translate research findings into actionable insights for real-world applications.

 

We value:

- Experience in semantic segmentation in medical images;

- Experience in generative AI for medical image synthesis;

- Experience with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), or retinal imaging;

- Experience or interest in advancing robust ML solutions that maintain performance under diverse and challenging conditions;

- Commitment to clear and honest communication of data and model limitations using established reporting standards and tools;

- A track record (or strong desire) for academic or industrial research, with publications or demonstrable project experience in ML;

- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams;

- Autonomous, dependable, proactive, and a critical-thinking team player.
