MSc and PhD students compete for the podium at the Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge 2018 Closing Event

The 9th edition of the Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge is in its final stretch. On October 31^st, the six finalists will present their ideas at the Closing Event, at the headquarters of Fraunhofer Portugal (Porto).

The finalists on the MSc category are:

> Ana Correia – “Functional Electrical Stimulation System for Drop Foot Correction: an AI-based approach”;

> Carolina Gouveia – “Bio-Radar”;

> José Dias – “New Generation of Green Printed Lithium-Ion Batteries”.

In turn, the finalists in the PhD category, are:

> Filipa Ferrada – “A Modeling Framework for Assessing Emotions in Collaborative Networks”;

> Rodrigo Bruno – “novaVM - Enhanced Java Virtual Machine for Big Data Applications”;

> Sanaz Asgarifar – “Novel Treatment of Glioblastoma Brain Tumour using Bioelectronic Devices”.

The 9^th edition of the Challenge was launched at the beginning of the year. Students and researchers of Portuguese Universities were challenged to present the ideas, based on MSc or PhD thesis. Smartphones, health, agriculture, developing countries, wearables, crowd sourcing, local positioning systems, mobility sensors, activity monitoring, sports, safety, seniors, big data and logistics were the preferred themes of the initiative.

The contest awards practical research in the areas of Information and Communication Tecnhologies (ICT), Multimedia or other related sciences. The submitted ideas should reflect the potential impact in the scientific areas currently being developed by the research centre, such as human-machine interaction, information processing and autonomous computing.

The winners will be announced at the Closing Event, taking place on October 31^st, where there will be a public presentation of the six best ideas selected for the final stage of the contest. The finalists will receive a scientific prize totalling 9.000€, which will be divided into two categories (MSc and PhD), with 3 places each (1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd Prize).

The Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge is an initiative promoted under the scope of the project ‘CTFhP – Collective Transfer FhP’, co-funded by ‘NORTE 2020 – Programa Operacional Regional do Norte’, ‘Portugal 2020’ and the European Union through the ‘FEDER – Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional’.
